Support Connection Receives Grants for Programs and Services

(Yorktown Heights, NY) Support Connection Inc., a not-for-profit organization offering free, confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer, recently received grants from two different organizations:

The Eileen Fisher Company in Irvington, NY awarded a grant of $5,000 to Support Connection to support wellness classes for women with cancer. As a socially conscious company, Eileen Fisher is dedicated to supporting women through social initiatives that address their well-being. Their contributions to programs addressing “Women’s Health and Well-being” support the integration of traditional and alternative therapies in achieving emotional, spiritual and physical health. The grant awarded to Support Connection will fund a year-long series of yoga and meditation classes for women with cancer.

The Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation, based in LaGrangeville, NY, a component fund of The Community Foundation of Dutchess, provides programs and support services for women and families in the Hudson Valley, New York affected by breast cancer. They awarded two grants to Support Connection in 2006: A grant of $5,300 to help fund creation and publication of a brochure that combines educational information about breast and ovarian cancer with information about Support Connection’s free services and programs. The Foundation also agreed to continue their support of Support Connection’s one-on-one peer counseling program for women with breast cancer by providing a $5,000 grant, plus an additional $5,000 from the Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon that they co-sponsored with Support Connection in October.

Support Connection Receives Grant for Breast Cancer Support Services

(Yorktown Heights, NY) Support Connection Inc., a not-for-profit organization offering free, confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer, recently received a grant for $10,000 from the Beth C. Tortolani Foundation.

The Beth C. Tortolani Foundation, based in Manhasset, NY, was established in 1996 to support and organize programs and services which provide resources, knowledge and skills to women with breast cancer and their families in order to enhance the quality of their lives. Their Breast Cancer Education Project Grants target existing or new programs with innovative projects regarding breast cancer, including informational programs for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer and/or their families, as well as informational support programs for the community referencing breast cancer.

The grant to Support Connection is for their Customized Care Services for Breast Cancer Survivors: Hotline, Information and One-on-One Counseling. This unique program provides free individualized support and education to women with breast cancer, their families and friends. A 24-hour toll free Hotline offers rapid response to those in need of information and/or support. Comprehensive, customized information packets are designed to meet the needs of each individual. The One-on-One Peer Counseling program offers continued support for as long as is needed, throughout each person’s journey through diagnosis, treatment, recovery and beyond.

Support Connection Volunteer Presented with United Way Award for Service

(Yorktown Heights, NY) Ilene Cohen, a 35 year resident of Yorktown Heights NY, was one of seven individuals and groups that received awards at the Volunteer Center of United Way’s 26th Annual Volunteer Spirit Awards, held at Doral Arrowwood in Rye Brook, NY on June 20, 2006. The celebration breakfast is held to recognize exceptional individuals and groups who have made important contributions to communities in Westchester and Putnam. The Volunteer Center of United Way, a nonprofit organization, has been the Center for volunteerism in Westchester and Putnam since 1949 and is part of a network of volunteer centers across the United States.

Ms. Cohen was presented with the “RSVP” (“Retired and Senior Volunteer Program”) Award. She was nominated by Support Connection Inc. for her volunteer work with their organization. Support Connection is a Yorktown-based not-for-profit organization offering free, confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Ms. Cohen has volunteered for Support Connection on a continual basis since September 1996 when the organization was first founded.

A survivor of ovarian cancer, Ms. Cohen wanted to give her time to an organization that helps other women who were facing similar challenges. Since the beginning, Ms. Cohen has volunteered an average of 20 –30 hours per week, giving an additional 150 hours every year to help with planning for the organization’s Annual Support-A-Walk. Her other volunteer contributions at Support Connection include establishing and coordinating a system of about 200 volunteers, managing the mailing list, attending community events, and assisting with numerous administrative tasks.

Katherine Quinn, Executive Director of Support Connection, says: “There is no one who deserves this honor more than Ilene Cohen. Her commitment and dedication to our cause is unparalleled. She does so much for our organization, with no expectation whatsoever of personal reward. Her only interest is enabling our program to succeed so that other women and families who have dealt with cancer can continue to receive critically needed help and support. Ilene is a priceless gift to Support Connection and the women we serve.”
