Support Connection Receives Grant for Peer Counseling Services
December 27, 2007
(Yorktown Heights, NY) Support Connection Inc., a not-for-profit organization offering free, confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer, recently received a $10,000 grant from The Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. The grant will help fund Support Connection’s One-on-One Peer Counseling Program for people affected by breast cancer.
Support Connection’s Peer Counseling program was established in 2000 to provide personalized, confidential support and education to anyone living with breast or ovarian cancer. The service is provided free of charge. Peer Counselors are women who have experienced breast or ovarian cancer and have also received professional training. Peer counseling is provided on the phone or in person, and is available from the time of diagnosis for as long as it is needed, as often as it is needed. Support is available to family members and loved ones as well. The demand for this service has grown steadily over the past seven years, and the grant from The Miles of Hope Foundation will help Support Connection to meet this increased need.

Thousands Attend Thirteenth Annual Support-A-Walk
(Yorktown Heights, NY) Close to 9,000 participants, including men and women, children and teens, took part in Support Connection’s 13th Annual Support-A-Walk that was held on Sunday, September 30, 2007, at FDR State Park in Yorktown Heights, NY. The event is held each year to raise awareness about breast and ovarian cancer and to raise funds to help fund Support Connection’s free support services for people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. This was the Support-A-Walk’s largest turnout ever, for an event that has grown every year since its inception.
The Support-A-Walk was founded thirteen years ago by local residents as a way to raise awareness about breast and ovarian cancer. Each year, thousands of people participate in this spirited, uplifting event. Participants complete a 3-mile walk, often in honor of loved ones – a celebration of life and a tribute to those who are affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Families, friends, co-workers and teams of walkers come together, as well as individuals who join in our mission. Local organizations, school groups and countless others contribute their time and talents on the day of the Walk to help make it a premier community event.
Master of Ceremonies Kacey Morabito of 100.7 WHUD Radio’s “Mike and Kacey in the Morning” welcomed the crowd, along with Honorary Chairperson Matt Sampson of Katonah, morning and daytime co-anchor for News 12 Westchester. Sampson joined forces with Buster Olney of Ossining, senior writer at ESPN The Magazine and author of the NY Times bestseller The Last Night Of the Yankee Dynasty, to lead the way for this year’s very successful “Calling All Men” campaign which encouraged more men to be apart of the Walk.
The 13th Annual Support-A-Walk was a day filled with sunshine to match the enthusiasm and spirit of the crowd. Support Connection, Inc. is grateful to all the walkers, sponsors and donors who helped make this day a tremendous success.
To be a part of next year’s Support-A-Walk, SAVE THE DATE! The 14th Annual Support-A-Walk will take place on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at FDR Park in Yorktown Heights, NY. Watch for details on our website www.supportconnection.org.

Hundreds Attend Support Connection’s Tenth Annual Gala
(Yorktown Heights, NY) More than 400 people attended Support Connection, Inc.’s Tenth Annual Gala and Silent Auction on April 13, 2007 at Colonial Terrace in Cortlandt Manor, NY. The evening was an opportunity for Support Connection to honor some of the people who have supported the organization, and to raise funds for their free support services and programs for people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Awards of distinction were presented to six individuals.
Spirit of Leadership Awards were presented to Nancy Heller and Richard Adamski, both of Yorktown Heights. As co-founders of Support Connection, Inc., Nancy and Rich have been the leaders and the driving force behind Support Connection from the beginning. In 1995, they organized a walk in Yorktown Heights to raise awareness about breast and ovarian cancer. Rich was motivated by the memory of his wife, Myra, who died of breast cancer. Nancy’s motivation came from her own experiences with breast cancer. Their first Walk drew about 800 people. That annual event now draws thousands of participants. From there, Rich and Nancy went on to establish Support Connection, ensuring that critically needed support services for people affected by breast and ovarian cancer would be available in our area. Their involvement has continued ever since. They share leadership of Support Connection’s board of directors and are both tireless volunteers for the organization.
A Spirit of Hope Award was presented to Bobbi Mergel of Yorktown Heights. Ms. Mergel first came to Support Connection 10 years ago as a breast cancer survivor, and soon after that offered her time and energy to help other women with cancer. Ever since, she has been a dedicated volunteer and proponent of Support Connection’s programs and services. Ms. Mergel was honored for giving hope and inspiration to countless other women with cancer through her kindness, courage, thoughtful determination and strength.
A Spirit of Caring Award was presented to Phyllis Karlin of Mohegan Lake, owner of KBK Designs in Shrub Oak, and her daughter Annette Karlin of Reno, Nevada. The Karlin’s and KBK were honored for their contributions to Support Connection’s mission. Annette is a jewelry designer who created a beautiful line of cancer-awareness jewelry especially for Support Connection. Phyllis and KBK donate a portion of all proceeds to Support Connection, and share information about Support Connection in their store to help with community outreach.
Humanitarian of the Year Awards were presented to David and Nancy Paganelli of Yorktown Heights, owners of Travelers Rest, Ossining. The Paganelli’s have generously hosted several fundraising events at their restaurant, donating all of the proceeds to help fund Support Connection’s services. They have hosted cancer awareness events, and have helped spread the word in the community about Support Connection’s mission. Dave also volunteers his time as a member of Support Connection’s Board of Directors.
