Yoga - A Path Toward Wellness

Open to women with cancer
Appropriate for beginners or more advanced students. Emphasis is placed on movement with breath awareness as a way to achieve a more tranquil mind. Experience the benefits of yoga, which include a stronger, healthier body and a calmer, more focused mind.
Dates: Saturdays, noon - 1:30 pm

Knitting Circle

The 4th Thursday of each month, 6:30 - 8:00pm, Yorktown Heights

Open to women living with cancer.
Instructor:  Marge Weiner

Whether you know how to knit or not, come join Marge Weiner for our Knitting Circle.  Great comfort is found in knitting and crocheting.  If you are a beginner, Marge will guide you.  If you already know the beauty that can be created by a ball of yarn, bring your projects and share your knowledge. Attendance of multiple sessions is encouraged, but not required. 


 

Exploring Music for Stress Relief and Relaxation

A variety of music experiences designed to relieve stress and encourage relaxation will be introduced by board-certified music therapist Maya Benattar. These experiences including drumming, music-assisted mediation/guided imagery, humming/toning, singing, and guided music listening. The concept of using music as a coping technique will be presented along with ideas and resources for your own personal use.

Maya Benattar holds an MA in Music Therapy from New York University and a BS in Music Therapy from SUNY New Paltz. A singer for many years, she enjoys helping people use music to find a "creative space for growth and exploration within our busy lives."


 

Meditation Workshop

Have you ever wondered:
•  What would it be like to experience the "meditative state"?
•  What is the right meditation technique for me?
•  Is there a simple way to practice meditation?
•  Can I learn to meditate without feeling like "one more thing" to do?
Then this workshop is for you!

The practice of meditation includes a wide range of techniques you can practice any time, in any way, and anywhere. It doesn't have to be practiced sitting in stillness.

In this four-session workshop, Instructor Chun Kim-Levin will gently guide you to experience many different ways to practice meditation so that you an reap its benefits. Some of the benefits attributed to meditation include slowing and deepening breath, relaxing the nervous system, relaxing muscles and tendons, increasing efficiency of the immune system, aiding in blood flow and increasing heart efficiency, and increasing digestive system functioning.

Chun Kim-Levin, MPA, RN, HN-BC, CYT has been a healthcare professional for over 35 years with 15 years of healthcare management experience. In 1997 Chun made a major career change and founded Life-Spring Holistic Services.


 

Intimacy and Sexuality After Cancer

The impact of a cancer diagnosis, surgery and treatment on the physical and psychological self is very powerful, resulting in changes that are often confusing and concerning. For most people a cancer diagnosis puts intimacy and sexuality on the back burner. Judith Leger, Women's Health Practitioner with years of experience helping women, and Robin Perlmutter, LMSW, Clinical Director of Support Connection and breast cancer survivor invite you to a presentation and discussion on Sexuality and Intimacy after Cancer. The presentation will open the door and cast sunlight on the following topics:

•  Normalizing the impact of cancer on Sexuality and Intimacy; Taking away the stigma.
•  Discussing some of the myths about Sex and Cancer
•  Talking with your doctor about the impact of cancer on sexuality and intimacy at time of
    diagnosis, during and after treatments. Discussing the discomfort experienced by both
    Partner and/or provider.
•  The impact of cancer on relationships:
   - Your partner as caregiver, supporter, lover
   - Differences between men and women
   - Fear of rejection
    -Self image/attractiveness
    -Sharing a history of cancer with new or current partner
•  Physical changes after surgery:
    Hysterectomy, early menopause and impact on desire.

Participants will be able to ask questions, share their concerns, support and learn ways to cope with impact of cancer on your life.


 

Everything You Wanted to Know About Hormone Therapy for Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer

Thursday, March 18, 2010, 7:00-8:30pm
Somers Public Library, Somers, NY

Participants will hear a presentation by Dr. Abraham Mittelman, who will discuss the following topics:

•  What is hormonal therapy and how does it work?
•  Understanding the differences between Tamoxifen, Arimidex, Femara and the other types
    of hormonal therapies for treating estrogen receptor positive breast cancer. Learn the     factors that help determine why one is chosen over the other.
•  Weighing the risks and benefits of hormonal therapies and monitoring the side effects.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

Dr. Mittelman is a medical oncologist who trained at Memorial Sloan Kettering and has more than 20 years experience in private practice in Purchase, NY, specializing in solid tumors.



Nutritional Strategies for Women with Cancer

Dr. Dori Vallis, ND believes that nutrition is a key strategy to fight cancer; it can have a positive impact in the battle for  better health.  Dr. Vallis, ND, a naturopathic physician and a breast cancer survivor herself, will discuss key nutritional strategies that can make a big difference. Stress, lifestyle choices and illness can undermine the body’s ability to stay healthy and Dr. Vallis will discuss her “Top 10” nutritional strategies for better health, including her favorite ‘super foods’ in fighting cancer. As a big advocate of whole foods and healthy cooking, she will share her favorite cooking tips, shopping strategies and preparation tactics that emphasize convenience and affordability. Everyday, Dr. Vallis uses nutrition to fight cancer and she successfully uses these nutritional strategies to help herself, her family and clients.

Dr. Vallis has a doctorate in naturopathic medicine (ND) from the University of Bridgeport, and a Masters in Clinical Nutrition. She also uses homeopathic medicine and completed her post-graduate, four-year professional program in Classical Homeopathy at the Teleosis School of Homeopathy.; she is certified in classical homeopathic medicine, earning her Diplomate in Homeopathy (DHANP, CCH).  She specializes in clinical nutrition, functional medicine and homeopathy in Danbury, CT. She works with recovering cancer patients to optimize their nutrition, using alternative medicine to complement their conventional medical protocols, and supporting them in their fight against cancer.

As the winter months approach we all start to dust off that pile of books we have been thinking about reading. We are asking you to share your ideas on a good winter book with us.  We all know how important support is.  Perhaps you know of a good read that affirms this.  Please send all your suggestions to andrea.karl@supportconnection.org.

Our discussions are always lively, interesting and diverse. If you would like to join us on April 28th just call our office to register…and we will get back to you with the author and title.  Again, please let us know of any book you feel may provide warmth on a winter’s night.


 

H20 Water Walking

This class is designed to increase joint flexibility with the aid of water resistance.
